C4 Complement Test Overview

C4 is a protein known as complement proteins found inside your body in the blood or on the surface of cells. These proteins function by helping your immune system fight infections and remove dead cells from the body. The C4 complement test helps doctors study the level of this protein in your body. Abnormal test results namely lower or higher than the normal range can indicate several health conditions ranging from a risk of cancer, to a risk of liver diseases such as hepatitis or liver cirrhosis. Based on the reason of prescribing and the test results the c4 complement test can also be used to monitor the risk of several diseases. Although this test is not used to diagnose or screen conditions independently.

Why Is A C4 Complement Test Prescribed?

A c4 complement test is prescribed to help doctors understand the efficacy of treatments for autoimmune conditions like lupus erythematosus. The c4 protein is lower than normal in the body when there’s an active inflammation in the body. For patients with an active diagnosis of inflammatory autoimmune conditions, this test can be used to test the efficacy of offered treatments. Based on the test results, doctors can determine whether the treatments are effective or not by measuring whether the c4 protein levels are increasing or not. If the protein levels are increasing it could indicate positive efficacy of treatment and decreasing protein levels could indicate the opposite.

Components of C4 Complement Test

The c4 complement test results are presented by mentioning the level of c4 protein in your blood compared to the normal levels. The ideal range of this protein in your blood’s plasma is 15 to 45 mg/dL. As mentioned, test results below or above this normal range could indicate a higher risk of medical conditions like cancer or liver disease. Further medical testing is required to identify the medical risks and accurately diagnose the conditions.

Procedure And Prerequisites

There are no specific prerequisites patients need to follow before going through a c4 complement test. The procedure of performing this test is done as a regular blood test. A sterilised syringe is used to draw blood from the veins in the forearm of the patient.
