Apolipoprotein B Test Overview

The apolipoprotein B test is used to check for cardiovascular and blood vessel diseases in the body. This test is being considered as a replacement for the lipid panel tests currently used as a standard for cholesterol level testing. The substance Apo B is known to be a major contributing factor in the formation of plaque that leads to blockages in the blood vessels and the heart.

The ApoB test screens your body for the substance, which would help doctors understand if you have an elevated risk of cardiovascular diseases or not. The apolipoprotein is responsible for transporting bad cholesterol like low-density lipoprotein (LDL), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) in your blood. Combined with lifestyle choices and other underlying health conditions, the presence of ApoB in your blood, indicates a higher chance of cardiovascular diseases.

When Is Apolipoprotein B Test Prescribed?

This test is prescribed by doctors when they suspect a patient is at a risk of cardiovascular diseases. Based on the test results, doctors can start treatment for the diagnosed problems. This test is currently used as an additional test alongside a lipid profile test to check for cholesterol levels in the body.

Components of Apolipoprotein B Test

Ideally patients should have an ApoB test result ranging between or lower than 65 or 80 mg/dL. Procedure And Prerequisites

The Apolipoprotein B test is a blood test performed by drawing blood from the veins in the arm of the patient. As a prerequisite patients are requested to fast for at least 10 to 12 hours before getting an ApoB test as usually other tests like Lipid profile are also done with Apolipoprotein B test.
