Amenorrhea Profile Test Overview

Amenorrhea is a condition that women of reproductive age are diagnosed with when they have missed more than three consecutive periods and they are not pregnant. It could be a sign of hormonal problems, and as such, the Amenorrhea profile test is prescribed to understand the underlying hormonal problems that are causing the menstrual problems.

This test checks for the levels of three of the most important menstrual hormones in the female body namely luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and prolactin (PRL). An Amenorrhea test can be helpful in helping doctors understand the underlying cause of this condition, which helps develop the treatment plan for this condition.

When is an Amenorrhea Profile Test Prescribed?

Doctors order an Amenorrhea profile test when women of reproductive age miss three or more consecutive periods. This test is also prescribed to girls above or of the age of 15 that have not started menstruating till then. Based on the pituitary hormone levels, doctors are able to understand the underlying cause for the missed periods. To understand the underlying cause doctors may even recommend a pregnancy test to rule out the possibility of a pregnancy.

Procedure And Prerequisites

This is a blood test and the sample is drawn from the veins in the arm of the patient. The test is preferably performed in the morning 4 hours after the patient has awakened. As a prerequisite, overnight fasting before the test may be recommended to the patient. It is also crucial that patients stop taking any biotin supplements they may be consuming at least 72 hours before the test.
