STD Panel Test Overview

As the name suggests, doctors use an STD panel test to screen patients for various sexually transmitted diseases. The method for performing an STD panel test is through a blood test. The blood sample is tested for the presence of multiple bacteria and viruses in the blood, which can indicate the presence of STDs.

In case of positive test results for any STD, doctors can accordingly recommend treatment. Some of the most common sexually transmitted diseases diagnosed using a full panel STD test include herpes, gonorrhoea, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), chlamydia, and syphilis. As a screening test, the reports of this panel test can be used to diagnose several conditions.

Why Is An STD Panel Test Prescribed?

Doctors can prescribe an STD panel test both as a general screening test and as a symptomatic diagnostic test. As a panel test, it has a broad spectrum of screening coverage for various sexually transmitted diseases. It is recommended to patients during regular health checkups if they have had multiple sexual partners, have been engaged in needle sharing with other people, or have had sexual contact with an infected person.

Some of the symptoms that can also warrant doctors to prescribe an STD panel test include:

Discharge from the sexual organ
Pain during sex
Bumps or sores on the genital or rectal region
Pain during urination
Rashes or itching around the genital region

When a woman is pregnant, this panel test is prescribed to them as a routine part of prenatal care.

Components of An STD Panel Test

Based on the number of tests offered in your panel, the results of each test will be expressed as either positive or negative to indicate the results. If you have any sexually transmitted disease, doctors can diagnose further, especially if you do not have any symptoms. If the test results are negative, it is a good way for women to ensure a safe pregnancy and for people in general to know they’re healthy in terms of their sexual health.

The STD panel test is performed as a blood test, which involves drawing blood from the veins in the arm of the patient and sending it for testing.
