Dengue Sign and Symptoms

Dengue (DENG-gey) or Break Bone fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease that occurs in tropical and sub-tropical regions. It is spread through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito to human beings. Dengue is caused by one of four viral serotypes, DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. 

Sign and Symptoms:

Dengue fever causes a high fever (102F- 104F)— And any of the following symptoms: 

Mild Symptoms includes:

headaches Pain behind the eyes Muscle, bone and joint pain Nausea Vomiting Swollen glands Low platelet count and petechiae rash 

Severe symptoms include:

Persistent vomiting Stomach or belly pain Blood in your urine, stools or vomit Bleeding from gums or nose Difficult or rapid breathing Bleeding under the skin, which might look like bruising A sudden drop in blood pressure Feeling tired, restless or irritable 


Complications:

Severe dengue fever can lead to multiorgan failure and shock even death can happen due to fall in blood pressure.
Infected pregnant women may be able to transmit the virus to the baby during childbirth. Dengue can cause harmful effects like low birth weight, premature birth, and death of the foetus. Hence a dengue test is a must when recommended by a doctor.


Prevention: 

Dengue can be prevented by preventing the mosquito bite by following ways:

  • Wear protective clothing while outdoor
  • Stay in air-conditioned or well-screened housing 
  • Reduce mosquito breeding to be stopped by avoiding water logging
  • Use mosquito repellent
