Anemia Panel 1 Test Overview

An anemia panel 1 test is used by doctors to understand if a patient has anemia or not. The test helps doctors understand the underlying cause of the symptoms and determine the severity of the situation. This all goes into developing a treatment plan that will help the patient recover quickly.

The anemia panel 1 test involves various blood tests, all of which help doctors understand the severity of the symptoms and underlying condition. This includes a complete blood count test, serum iron studies, ferritin protein, total albumin, A:G ratio, transferrin, CRP, and hemoglobin electrophoresis.

This panel test is crucial in helping patients beat anemia because if left untreated it can lead to extreme medical conditions and fatal consequences.

When Is An Anemia Panel 1 Test Prescribed?

An anemia panel 1 test is prescribed when doctors suspect that the symptoms you are facing relate to anemia. This test helps doctors diagnose whether you have anemia or not. And given this test is general blood work and creates a comprehensive panel of your health, it can also help doctors get an indication towards other conditions that may be affecting you, if not anemia. Here are some of the symptoms that warrant an anemia panel 1 test prescription from doctors.

  • Chest pain, dizziness, or lightheadedness
  • Pale skin and inflammation on your tongue
  • Weakness and fatigue along with getting cold hands and feet
  • Brittle nails

Components of An Anemia Panel 1 Test

The tests performed under anemia panel 1 are not independent of each other. Even though each test has their own normal ranges, their results are looked at in a combined point of view to understand if the patient has anemia or not.

If doctors suspect the patient has anemia, these individual tests are required to confirm their diagnosis. The individual tests are packaged as a panel test to help both doctors and patients. The individual components tested in this panel test are as follows:

  • Complete blood count test
  • Serum iron studies
  • Ferritin protein
  • Total albumin
  • A:G ratio
  • Transferrin
  • CRP
  • Hemoglobin electrophoresis

Procedure And Prerequisites

An anemia panel 1 test is a blood test and the procedure is just collecting a blood sample from the patient and sending it for testing. In most cases, the sample is collected from the veins in the arm of the patient. As for prerequisites it is recommended that patients fast overnight before the day of the test and stop any iron supplements they may be taking at least 24 hours prior to the test.
