Beta 2 microglobulin (B2M) CSF fluid test is used by doctors to understand a patient’s risk of certain blood and bone marrow cancers. Beta 2 Microglobulin is a tumour marker that’s created in your body by cancer cells or normal cells when there is a presence of cancer in your body.
While the beta 2 microglobulin (B2M) CSF fluid test can tell doctors about your cancer risk, it can not independently diagnose any cancer. This is mainly because there are numerous factors that can lead to the increase of B2M in your body.
Only if you have already been diagnosed with some types of blood and bone marrow cancer, this test can help doctors understand disease progression and treatment efficacy.
A beta 2 microglobulin (B2M) CSF fluid test is prescribed by doctors to assess the cancer risk in patients for certain types of blood and bone marrow cancers. The specific cancer risks that are monitored using this test are multiple myeloma, multiple sclerosis, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), and certain types of lymphoma.
Apart from cancer risk monitoring, the beta 2 microglobulin (B2M) CSF fluid test is also used to diagnose and monitor certain types of inflammatory conditions, infectious diseases like HIV, and certain kidney diseases. This test is a tumour marker and can also be prescribed in other conditions to monitor the growth or presence of a tumour in the body.
The normal levels of a beta 2 microglobulin (B2M) CSF fluid test is 0.6 and 2.4 mg/L. Any test result that is beyond the reference range presented could be indicative of the following health concerns.
● Higher levels of B2M is linked with a higher risk of cancer that’s aggressive, i.e. cancer that grows faster.
● Patients who have multiple myeloma, lower than normal levels of B2M can be indicative of kidney problems.
● For patients who are diagnosed with cancer, a higher B2M value shows ineffective treatment, lower value shows the treatment’s effectiveness.
● The same value of B2M as previous tests in cancer patients shows the condition being stable and not growing further.
The beta 2 microglobulin (B2M) CSF fluid test is performed using a technique known as spinal tap. The test is performed by inserting a hollow needle at the base of the spine and drawing a small amount of spinal fluid. There are no special prerequisites for this test.
