Serum Beta HCG test is a blood test which detects level of hormone called human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) in blood. This hormone is produced at time of pregnancy so this test is useful as a pregnancy confirmation test. This hormone can be detected both in blood and urine. It is produced by placenta to maintain the corpus luteum during pregnancy. It has 2 subunits alpha & beta, of which beta subunit is unique and can be measured in plasma & urine.
