Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) Post Dialysis Test Overview

A blood urea nitrogen post dialysis test is performed after the completion of dialysis in a patient to understand the effectiveness of the treatment. Dialysis is a treatment option that’s offered to patients who have chronic kidney problems that hinders their kidneys from functioning normally. The dialysis machine helps remove the waste from blood.

The goal of the BUN post dialysis test is to check if dialysis is effective or not. Based on the test results doctors can determine whether dialysis is working as it is intended or if the condition has worsened. If the treatment is insufficient, doctors can alter the dialysis regimen to better help the patient.

When Is A Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) Post Dialysis Test Prescribed?

A BUN post dialysis test is prescribed by doctors to patients who are undergoing dialysis treatment for kidney problems. Dialysis is prescribed to patients who are undergoing kidney failure, some of the conditions that can lead to kidney failure include: diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, obesity, and smoking.

The blood urea nitrogen post dialysis test is also prescribed to understand the efficacy of dialysis treatment and if the kidney failure is manageable with the dialysis efforts or not. If the condition is not manageable, doctors may recommend other treatment options.

Components of A Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) Post Dialysis Test

A BUN post dialysis test measures the urea nitrogen levels in your blood and body fluids like the peritoneal fluid. The normal level of urea nitrogen in serum is 9 mg/dL and in peritoneal fluid it is 1.0 mg/dL. Doctors can perform the blood urea nitrogen post dialysis test twice, once before the dialysis and once after to get a complete profile of the treatment’s efficacy. However, the BUN post dialysis test can also only be performed once after the dialysis to check if the urea nitrogen levels in your blood and body fluids are in a controlled range or not.

Procedure And Prerequisites

The procedure of performing a blood urea nitrogen post dialysis test is to draw blood from the veins of the patient and send it for a bun post dialysis test. There are no specific prerequisites patients need to follow for going through a blood urea nitrogen post dialysis test.
