C3 Complement Test Overview

There are nine proteins in the human body, starting from C1 all the way through C9, that are essential for the functioning of the immune system. These proteins are found in the blood and on the surface of some cells, and they help fight infections and remove dead cells in the body. The imbalance in the levels of these proteins can be indicative of autoimmune conditions, as the presence of inflammation in the body can lead to a lower-than-normal level of complement proteins.

The C3 complement protein is one of the nine proteins, and it can help doctors understand the efficacy of certain treatments for autoimmune health conditions. The c3 complement test is generally used as a diagnostic test ordered by doctors to monitor treatment progress in patients, in most cases, it is not opted for voluntarily or used for diagnosing health conditions.

Why Are C3 Complement Tests Prescribed?

C3 complement tests are prescribed by doctors to understand the efficacy of treatment for autoimmune conditions. Elevated or lower-than-normal levels of the C3 protein in the human body could be a sign of underlying illness. Even though this test is not used to diagnose any medical condition independently, the test results can be used to point towards a higher risk of several health concerns.

Components of C3 Complement Test

The C3 protein is naturally found in the blood, and its normal levels in the body range between 88 to 201 mg/dL. The results of a c3 complement test are presented as the level of the protein in your blood compared to the normal range metioned above. Based on your test reports, a higher than normal level of c3 protein can be indicative of health conditions like cancer. A lower-than-normal level of c3 protein can indicate several medical conditions, including hepatitis, systemic lupus, and liver cirrhosis, among others.

Procedure And Prerequisites

There are no specific prerequisites patients need to follow before going through a c3 complement test. This test is performed as a blood test, and the blood sample is drawn from the veins in the patient’s forearm using a sterilised syringe. The sample is then stored in an airtight vial and sent to the laboratory for testing.
