What are the components of the glucose postprandial test?
The test measures the blood glucose levels, usually at 2hrs, after a meal. Blood glucose levels rise as soon as food enters the body. The pancreas subsequently discharges insulin into the blood. Insulin transports circulatory glucose into tissue and fat cells, which can be stored as energy. After two hours after eating, blood glucose levels should return to normal if the system works properly. The pancreas may not produce enough insulin in people with diabetes, or there may be cells that inhibit insulin from transferring glucose. In this case, the glucose level would still be elevated two hours after eating.
