MEAN CORPUSCULAR VOLUME

 Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) Overview

A Mean Corpuscular Volume test, or MCV blood test, is used by doctors to check the average size of the red blood cells in your body. This test is often part of the complete blood count test prescribed by doctors. The size of red blood cells can help doctors diagnose certain conditions and also prevent medical complications.

The red blood cells in your body carry oxygenated blood from lungs  to different body parts. The size and volume of RBC in your body can be detrimental in diagnosing conditions like anaemia or liver disease.

When Is A Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) Blood Test Prescribed?

Doctors can prescribe an MCV blood test as a part of regular blood testing during preventative healthcare checkups. Apart from regular checkups, there are specific symptoms that warrant doctors to prescribe this blood test.

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Shortness of breath

These symptoms can be signs of anaemia, and doctors can prescribe an MCV blood test to determine the root cause of the symptoms.

Components of A Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) Test

The results of this blood test are expressed in a manner that allows patients to study their test results themselves. The reports often note the average size of a red blood cell in human beings, the MCV blood test normal range as per the laboratory, and the size of the red blood cells of the patients. While patients can read the report and identify if their results are in the normal range, only medical professionals can understand what these results mean in the context of their health.

If your test results show that your red blood cells are smaller than the normal range, it could indicate underlying health conditions like anaemia or thalassemia. A larger than normal size red blood cell could indicate underlying conditions like liver problems or vitamin B12 deficiency. It is important to note that comparing the MCV blood test normal range with your results cannot effectively diagnose the conditions listed above. Further testing is required to diagnose underlying conditions appropriately.

Procedure And Prerequisites

As a regular blood test, patients have no special prerequisites before going through this test. The process simply requires drawing blood from the veins in the patient’s arm. For more information about MCV blood test prices, check with your local Aster Labs diagnostic centre.
