PATRILINEAL TESTING BY Y-STR PROFILING

Patrilineal Testing By Y-STR Profiling Test Overview

Patrilineal testing by Y-STR profiling is a type of DNA fingerprinting test. Y-STR DNA profiling is used to find a person's paternal lineage. The Y chromosome that is present in males is passed down almost identically from father to son. As such, the Y-STR DNA profiling test can be used to determine paternity and also learn more about the paternal heritage of a person and their relation to male relatives based on their shared paternal ancestry. The test is performed as a general blood test to get the best possible DNA sample from the person being tested.

Why is A Patrilineal Testing By Y-Str Profiling Test Prescribed?

Patrilineal testing by Y-STR profiling is not prescribed by doctors in response to any medical condition or symptoms. The test is also not used for any medical screening purposes. The test is generally opted for by patients if they’re interested in confirming paternity or learning more about their paternal heritage. The test is highly accurate in determining paternity if two good quality DNA samples such as blood samples can be obtained.

Components of Patrilineal Testing By Y-Str Profiling Test

The results of patrilineal testing by the Y-STR profiling test are expressed in numbers as a haplotype. A haplotype is a combination of all the markers of the Y-chromosome that’s tested in the Y-STR DNA profiling test. Generally, five markers are tested, each correlating to a numeric repeat count. The entire sequence of repeat count of the five markers is termed a haplotype, and it is generally similar among fathers and sons. The similarities may also be found between people who are related by blood but are not father and son, such as relatives of the paternal side. This test cannot be used to learn more about your maternal lineage.

Procedure and Prerequisites

A Y-STR DNA profiling test is performed by obtaining a blood sample. This is done by drawing blood from the patient's forearm using a sterilised syringe. The blood sample is stored in refrigeration while it is transported to be tested at a laboratory. There are no dietary prerequisites before going through this test. However, a duly filled and signed consent form must be submitted in a sealed envelope at the time of sample collection. Passport-size photographs must be attached to the consent form, and the pictures must be self-attested. The relationship to be established between the two samples also needs to be mentioned before the test, along with the phlebotomist's signature and details. Lastly, a declaration must be signed by individuals and self-attested, along with a copy of a government-approved ID proof. All of these must be submitted as a prerequisite at the time of sample collection.
