Urine Pregnancy Test Overview
Doctors use a urine pregnancy test or UPT test to check whether a woman is pregnant or not. This is a common diagnostic test that’s performed using a urine sample from the person. Doctors test for the presence of beta hCG in the urine. The HCG hormone, which is also known as the human gonadotropin hormone, only develops in the body of a woman when they are pregnant. This is the most common way to detect pregnancy, and home pregnancy test kits also use the same method of detecting hCG hormone in the urine to detect pregnancy.
Doctors can order the UPT test for pregnancy if they suspect pregnancy in patients. Certain symptoms like missed menstrual periods, backache, fatigue, nausea, or vomiting (also known as morning sickness) can warrant doctors to prescribe a UPT test for pregnancy. This test has excellent accuracy, and if the testing is done following due process, the results can be as high as 99% accuracy. The UPT test is one of the most basic and useful pregnancy determination tests. Alternatively, the same test can also be performed using a blood test where the presence of hCG hormone is tested in blood.
The results of a UPT test are expressed as either positive or negative. Positive results mean the person is pregnant, and negative results mean no pregnancy. As the presence of hCG hormone in the body can only be caused due to pregnancy, the chances of a false positive test report are relatively unlikely. A false negative report for a UPT test for pregnancy, however, can be pretty common for women if they take the test too early in their pregnancy. It is recommended that women take this test up to 10 days after their missed periods to ensure that the results are accurate.
The procedure for performing the UPT test includes collecting a urine sample in a container provided by the diagnostic centre. It is recommended to use the first urine in the morning as a sample, as it has the highest concentration of hCG.
