Renal Function Test (RFT+GFR) Overview

Doctors use the renal function test (RFT) to determine kidney health. It includes several individual tests, all of which are used to understand the kidney’s internal functioning thoroughly. The goal of these tests is to diagnose kidney disorders and determine whether the patient is having overall problems with their renal health.

The Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) is one of the most crucial aspects of renal function testing. This test determines how well the kidneys can filter waste from the body. It is used both as a routine test for ageing adults and to diagnose kidney diseases if doctors suspect any signs.

Why Is The Renal Function Test (RFT+GFR) Prescribed?

Doctors can prescribe a renal function test as a preventative measure for ageing adults. This is mainly because the risk of kidney problems and other lifestyle factors increases with age. For diagnostic purposes, there are several symptoms that warrant doctors to prescribe a renal function test (RFT+GFR). Here are some of the most common symptoms listed.

  • Blood in urine

  • Puffiness of Eyes

  • Swelling of lower Limbs

  • Fatigue

These symptoms are not specific to kidney problems and can indicate several issues in the urinary tract of patients. The renal function test is used to determine whether these symptoms are caused by kidney problems or not.

Components of Renal Function Test (RFT+GFR)

The renal function test works as a panel test, which involves testing the sample for different parameters and creating a comprehensive report on kidney health for doctors. Generally, these tests include testing four specific parameters of the sample: urea, creatinine, uric acid, and Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR).

  • Urea: The normal range is between 5 to 20 mg/dl. Abnormal results can indicate improper kidney function, dehydration, or liver disease.

  • Creatinine: The normal range is between 0.6 to 1.1 mg/dL. Abnormal test results can indicate problems with kidney function.

  • Uric Acid: The normal range for men is 2.5 to 7.0 mg/dl and 1.5 to 6.0 mg/dl for women. Results beyond this range can indicate kidney disease, stones, or liver disease.

  • Glomerular Filtration Rate: A GFR of 90 and above is considered healthy. Any result below 60 could indicate kidney disease.

Procedure And Prerequisites

A renal function test is performed as a simple blood test. A sample is drawn from the veins in the patient’s arm and sent for testing. For more detailed information about RFT tests such as the renal function test price, check with your local Aster Labs diagnostic centre today.
