SGOT/Aspartate Amino Transferase (AST) Test Overview

The SGOT test stands for Serum Glutamic-Oxaloacetic Transaminase Test and is also known as the Aspartate Amino transferase (AST) Test. Both these tests are the same, and they are used to measure the level of Aspartate Amino transferase (AST) in the blood. This enzyme is found in the liver, heart, and kidneys and is used by the body to convert food into energy.

Increased levels of AST in your blood can indicate several health problems. Though the AST test is not used to diagnose health conditions independently, it is an integral diagnostic tool doctors use to understand the cause of several health problems.

Why Is An SGOT Aspartate Amino Transferase (AST) Test Prescribed?

The AST test is prescribed by doctors if they are concerned about your heart, liver, kidney, or muscle health. Several symptoms, like yellowing of the skin, which is indicative of jaundice, dark yellow urine, belly pain, nausea, and vomiting, can warrant doctors to prescribe the SGOT test. Apart from the symptoms mentioned above, there are other symptoms related to your cardiac and muscular health, which can lead doctors to prescribe this test. The symptoms include:

  • Weakness or muscular pain

  • Unexplained sweating excessively

  • Shortness of breath

  • Loss of appetite

  • Pale coloured stool

Components of A SGOT/Aspartate Amino Transferase (AST) Test

The SGOT range in blood tests ranges between 8 and 45 units per litre of serum. For men, any test result above 50 can be considered above normal, and for women, any test result above 45 can be regarded as above normal. A higher-than-normal SGOT range in blood tests can be indicative of cardiac problems, liver disease, or conditions like pancreatitis. It is important to note that based on the results of the SGOT test, doctors prescribe further diagnostic or imaging tests to confirm or deny any diagnosis.

Procedure And Prerequisites

The SGOT test is performed as a simple blood test. The procedure involves drawing blood from the veins in the arm of the patient and sending the sample for testing. There are no prerequisites for this test that patients need to follow. For more information about SGOT test price, contact your local Aster Labs diagnostic centre today.
