Tropical Fever Panel PCR Test Overview

Certain diseases are prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. These conditions are often viral in nature and require thorough medical attention to treat. Getting treatment for these conditions can be challenging, as determining the infection first is crucial. A tropical fever panel test is helpful for doctors to thoroughly screen for several tropical illnesses at once and get the treatment started as soon as possible.

Several conditions are screened using the tropical fever panel test, including Zika virus infection, Dengue, Salmonella spp, West Nile virus, Chikungunya virus, Leptospira spp, Plasmodium spp, and Rickettsia spp. The tropical fever panel PCR test can be independently used to diagnose these conditions and based on the symptoms and health condition of the patient, further diagnostic or imaging tests may be prescribed.

Why Is A Tropical Fever Panel PCR Test Prescribed?

A tropical fever panel is prescribed by doctors based on symptoms presented by patients. Doctors may ask the patient if they had travelled internationally before the symptoms started appearing before prescribing the tropical fever panel. This is because some conditions screened for in this panel test are of foreign origin and not common for people exclusively living in India. The symptoms that can warrant doctors to prescribe a tropical fever panel are listed below.

  • Chills and sweating

  • High running fever

  • Unexplained weakness and fatigue

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Pain in joints and muscles

  • Severe headache

Components of A Tropical Fever Panel PCR Test

The tropical fever panel tests for several viral infectious diseases in the body and presents the results in terms of positive and negative for each of the conditions it checks against. A positive result means there are antigens, antibodies, or pathogens related to that disease present inside the body. Negative results generally mean that the condition is not affecting the patient. False positives or negatives are rare for this type of test as the antibodies for these specific illnesses are only made in the body when there’s a presence of the virus in the body.

Procedure and Prerequisites

A tropical fever panel PCR test is performed by collecting a sample swab from the patient. Doctors insert a narrow, long swab in the patient's nasal cavity to collect cell samples. The sample is then sent for testing to check for the presence of antibodies, antigens, or pathogens in the patient’s body. There are no prerequisites patients need to follow for this test.
