Zinc, 24-Hour Urine Test Overview

A 24-hour zinc urine test is used by doctors to check the amount of zinc that is excreted from the body in a 24-hour period. This test doesn’t require multiple urine samples, instead, all the urine a person excretes in a day is stored in a single container, and it is then sent to the laboratory for testing. Why Is a Zinc, 24 Hour Urine Test Prescribed?

Components of Zinc, 24-Hour Urine Test

The results of a zinc 24-hour urine test are presented in terms of the test value compared to the normal range. The normal range of a zinc 24-hour urine test can range between 22–966 mcg in a 24-hour period. Elevated levels can indicate excess zinc in the body. Lower than normal zinc levels can indicate a zinc deficiency that needs to be medically treated.

Procedure and Prerequisites

The zinc 24-hour urine test is performed by preserving all the urine the patient passes in a day into a sterile container provided by the Aster Labs team. The urine sample is then sent to the laboratory for testing. It is crucial to note that there are no fasting prerequisites for this test. However, patients are required to not consume any seafood or freshwater fish for at least three days prior to the day of the test.
